정동 문화 무대

#일상으로의 극장

정동길의 덕수궁에 가까운 초입길에 있는 정동극장 부지는 북쪽으로는 중명전, 남쪽으로는 정동제일교회의 사이역사적 가치가 풍부한 곳이다. 1800-1900 년대 도시 조직이 일상의 공간에 함께하고 있다는 점에서 정동길은 독특한 물리적 특징들을 가지고 있으며 특히 과거의 스케일감이 곳곳에 새겨져 있어 서울의 신시가지 지역에서는 느낄수 없는 아늑함과 정감이 이 곳에는 매우 잘 느껴진다. 이러한 역사적 가치와 더불어 다양한 연령대의 사람들로 가득차 있어 항상 생동감이 넘친다. 우리는 과거와 현재가 일상의 삶에 공존하는 정동길의 의미를 되새기고 새로 계획하는 정동극장으로 하여금 문화의 중심지가 될 있는 일상으로서의 극장을 계획하고자 하였다. 다양하게 활용 될 수 있는 마당 공간을 정동길에 인접하여 전면에 배치하여 다양한 예술, 문화활동이 가능한 야외 공연/무대로 만들었다. 1층 로비에서 2층으로 이어지는 들여 올려진 매스는 이 야외 문화 마당공간을 입체적으로 둘러싸고 있으며, 2층의 내부 공간에서도 마당에서 일어나는 예술/문화활동을 바라보며 함께할 수 있는 공간으로 만들었다. 소극장의 매스는 이 들여올려진 매스를 관통하여 야외 예술/문화 마당에 미디어 스크린으로 활용된다. 평상시에는 공연 정보를, 때로는 마당에서 펼쳐지는 야외공연의 배경화면으로, 축구경기가 중계되는 야외 스크린으로, 야외 미술 장치로 활용 될 수 있는 이 다목적 미디어 스크린은 야외 마당 무대 공간을 한층더 기술적으로 활용가능한 입체적 공간으로 만들어준다. 이와 함께 야외 마당 무대는 다양한 예술, 문화적 활동이 가능한 터가 된다. 각종 예술 공연 및 전시, 문화활동 및 벼룩시장과 같은 지역 경제활동들까지 다양한 활동이 가능하게 되며, 1년 내내 프로그램가능한 공간이 되어 공연활동이 없는 날에도 살아있는 문화 공간으로서 역할을 하게 된다. 지하에 위치한 대공연장은 지하라는 단점을 역으로 이용하여 지하의 특징을 살리고자 하였다. 대공연장 매스를 오브제로써 활용하여 수직적인 지하 공간의 오브제 속으로 탐험해 들어가는 여정으로써 시퀀스를 짜고 빛과 그림자가 느껴지는 전이 공간으로 계획하였다. 이와 대응적으로 소공연장은 들여올려진 투명한 파사드 매스 사이에 위치하여, 정동길의 풍경을 담은 공간으로 계획하였다.

Scenic Poesis

1. Architecture as boundary; Nature and Architecture

Located at the Southwestern edge of Bukhansan National Park and the city border, the site has a very unique geographical presence. The proposed National Museum of Korean Literature is an architecture that responds to the flow and shape of the land, and is a humble but beautiful structure that fits with the rich natural environment and the scenery of the Bukhansan. By utilizing the topographical feature of the slope, two civic grounds are formed; the upper level of green roof park, an extension from the existing neighborhood park, and the lower level of the new public museum plaza which will be connected from the future Arts Village. The museum building is three-dimensionally located between these two civic grounds. The sloping roof shape which is inspired by the roof line of the Korean traditional architecture blends with the surrounding mountains and landscape. The new National Museum of Korean Literature will be a new type of architecture as a social platform and a culture messenger.

2. A Museum as a Park; the Literature Park

We propose a museum that is a park for everyone. We located such civic spaces in a very democratic way where it could be accessed from multi-levels and different points. The green roof park is a unique park that introduces the slopes providing view corridors towards the Bukhansan scenery and also towards the city. The museum plaza is located at the main entrance level by setting back the building from the West property line adjacent to the future Arts Village. This is a multi-functional public realm for both museum and the people. People can visit the museum park to rest, to read, and to play. The museum transcends from the traditional archive museum to a new type of architecture with true civic space that connects the people.

3. A Museum as an Interactive Platform; Archive and Learn

We propose a museum that is a flexible interactive platform for both preservation and communication purpose. Unlike traditional museum of one-way information flow, we focused on creating variety of spaces where visitors can learn and experience interactively in a multi-way information flow. We created the main Complex Cultural Space with the continuous visual and physical connectivity between the nature and Collection. People can experience the nature in the Secrete Garden(outdoor gallery) while they can also experience the collection archive, the main gem of the museum, both visually physicall. We propose one of the three Collection Storage to be an experiential space where visitors can actually travel inside and physically experience a certain portion of the archive. We also created both controlled exhibition area where special exhibition could be easily accommodated with various media. The museum becomes an interactive learning vessel.

4. A Daily Museum for the Neighborhood

We propose the new museum to be very special and extraordinary but at the same time we propose it to be a daily museum. We want the museum alive 365-days of the year. We created the main circulation to be like a promenade, an extension of park trail conceptually, where people can daily use. This fluid spine of public circulation is consisted of reading area, book café, learning, event space and also with the community space. This unique common area truly becomes the platform for daily use; a culture messenger both locally and in larger context. We propose continuous visual and physical connectivity between the building and surrounding environment to depart from the traditional boundaries between building, landscape. A genuine active and transparent space while providing functionality simultaneously.

원주 시립 미술관 설계공모

우리가 제안하는 미술관은 자연을 산책하면서 역사를 인지하고 예술 작품을 감상, 체험하는 자연 속 예술 마을이다. 우리는 기존 건축물이 증축부의 계륵이 아닌 병렬식 배치를 통해 하나 하나가 주인공이 되는 배치를 하였다. 또한 기존 미군 건축물 사이공간을 재해석하여 미술관의 심장부가 되는 다목적 문화 마당이 있는 프롬나드를 형성하였다. 미술관은 건물이 중심이 아닌 다채롭고 아기자기한 외부 공간이 핵심이 된다. 저층부는 공원이 되고 신축과 구축 건물은 독립적으로 배치된다. 상층부의 고리(Ring)형 매스를 통해 각 건물은 민주적으로 연결된다. 이 고리형 매스는 복합문화 공간으로서의 공용홀로써 자연을 담는 전망대이자 외부전시와 이벤트를 접할 수있는 새로운 관람홀이다. 투명한 이 유리 매스는 솔리드한 전시 매스들과 연결된다. 우리는 이 솔리드함을 석재(Travertine)을 사용하여 자연적 물성을 강조하고 아름답게 나이드는 미술관을 떠올렸다.

원폭피해자 추모시설 설계공모

우리가 제안하는 원폭피해자 추모시설은 부지의 자연지세를 따르고 사계절 풍경을 담으며, 기존의 시설과 어우러지고, 지역 주민과 방문객에게 새로운 가치 창조공간이 되는 일상의 추모 공간이다. 새로운 추모시설은 선형의 대지를 따라 매스의 수평성을 강조하였으며, 회랑을 통해 느슨한 경계를 형성하고 풍경을 담고자 하였다. 회랑의 일부인 추모벽은 기존 시설을 유기적으로 연결하는 매개체가 된다. 우리는 추모관이 위로를 위한 엄숙한 공간이 되길 원하면서도 새로운 가치 창조공간이 되는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 가장자리의 어둠과 중앙의 밝음이 공존하는 고요한 공간을 형성함과 동시에 외부 공간과 직접적으로 연계되어 필요에 따라 밝은 공간이 될 수 있는 공간으로 계획하였다. 방문객과 거주민들을 위해 일상의 공간으로써, 추모홀(공용부)은 대야성산을 바라보는 부지 동쪽에 위치시켜 원경의 풍경을 담고 시민들과 거주민의 쉼터가 된다. 북측 근경을 담은 추모광장과 연계된 추모관은 전체 시설의 중심 공간으로 계획하였고 기존 자료관 영역과 연계된다. 우리는 시설 대지 전체에 유기적 연결 역할을 하는 강력한 축을 설정하였고, 이를 건축공간과 외부공간을 연계하는 매개체로 활용했다. 새로운 추모시설은 주변 환경과 어우러지는 색감과 재질의 재료를 적용하고자 하였으며, 코르텐스틸, 노출콘크리트, 유리를 주 마감재로 지정하였다.

빛의 수직 기념비

서울의 가장 큰 지리적 특징은 한강 물줄기와 도시를 둘러싼 산세인데, 한강은 서울의 중심부를 가로지른다는 점에서 서울의 이미지를 형성하는 데 지배적인 역할을 한다. 과거 한강개발계획으로 인해 한강 변에 둑이 쌓아지고 8차선 도로가 들어서면서 한강은 교통, 수위 조절 등의 기능적 역할은 확대되었으나 도시와의 소통은 단절되며 고립된 공간으로 변모했다. 따라서 한강이 다시 도시와 호흡하며 시민들에게 다양한 여가의 공간으로서 공공성을 회복하고 서울의 진정한 자연 자산이 되어야 한다는 사실은 반박할 수 없다. 과거 여러 계획으로 인해 넓어진 한강의 폭과 규모를 인정하고 이러한 특수성에 대응하며 다양하고 적극적이며 구체적인 방식으로 한강 전체를 디자인할 필요가 있다. 노들섬 부지는 남북 방향으로는 광화문-서울역-삼각지-용산-한강-노들섬을 잇는 국가상징가로의 최종 부분이며, 동서 방향으로는 서울 용산구에 속하며 한강의 중앙부에 위치한다. 따라서 노들섬의 위치는 한강의 그 어떠한 장소보다도 랜드마크가 될 수 있는 상징성을 띠고 있다.

우리가 제안하는 한강 랜드마크 프로젝트인 ‘빛의 춤(Light Dance)’은 물리적인 오브제로서 랜드마크가 아닌, 빛으로 세우는 랜드마크가 되는 것을 상상한다. 낮에는 자연과 예술이 중심이 되는 활기찬 섬으로, 밤에는 섬의 흥과 얼을 빛으로 전이시키는 상징적인 장소가 된다. ‘빛의 기념비’는 섬의 동쪽 기단부의 평평한 장소에 계획하였으며, 이는 섬의 서쪽에 위치한 노을이 드는 야외공연장과 함께 섬 양단의 두 거점 역할을 하게된다. ‘빛의 기념비’는 조명 장치의 방향에 따라 춤추듯 다양한 빛의 형상과 패턴을 만들어낼 수 있다. 또한 다양한 색의 빛도 연출한다. 조명 장치가 설치된 이 구조물은 기념비로 활용하도록 계획하였으며, 홍수위를 고려하여 조명 장치가 물에 잠기지 않도록 높이를 계획하였고, 홍수 시에도 강물 흐름의 저항을 최소화할 수 있는 형태로 기능적인 측면과 미적인 측면을 모두 고려하였다. 빛의 광장과 함께 빛의 기념비 구조물은 빛의 중심부를 체험할 수 있는 독특한 경험을 제공하는 장소가 된다. 우리가 제안하는 ‘빛의 춤’ 프로젝트는 항상 무엇인가 물리적으로 채우고 세워서 상징적인 장소를 만든다는 관념에서 벗어나고자 한 고민의 결과이다.

해당 벤치(기대기+앉기 벤치)는 다양한 도시 보행자를 위해 필요에 따라 앉거나 기대 쉴 수 있는 두 가지 휴식 행위를 수용할 수 있는 벤치이다. 일반 너비의 앉을 수 있는 부분과 좁은 너비의 기댈 수 이는 부분으로 구성되며 벤치가 차지하는 부분을 일부 줄이고 조금 더 많은 사람을 수용할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 벤치는 기대기, 앉기 등의 개별적 기능이 있는 UHPC(Ultra High Performance Concrete) 모듈로 구성된다. 모듈 조합을 통해 필요에 따라 더 많은 사람이 앉거나 혹은 더 많은 사람이 기대 쉴 수 있도록 모듈을 조합할 수 있다. 사람들이 안전하게 이용할 수 있도록 유선형의 형태와 부드러운 모서리를 적용하였으며, 내구성이 좋은 재료인 UHPC를 사용하여 거친 도시 환경에 오랫동안 지속될 수 있도록 하였고, 도시 환경의 미적 측면도 고려하여 조형적 오브제 역할도 할 수 있도록 고안하였다.

1. Library as a place of interactive learning and healing

Our architectural proposal focuses on the power of the physical environment design that promotes the library function as platform for the true socio-physical interaction by utilizing several architectural elements with the combination of nature where people can truly heal from daily urban life and experience the joy of learning.

The Live-rary is about ever-changing image of the scenery by the live nature and people’s activities. It is about integrating the outdoor landscape open space as main facial element of the library while keeping the building with the minimal architectural gesture. The open-air canopy structure shelters the open space and promotes various activities. The four stories glass curtain wall atrium is a transitional space between the open space and the library. It is a fluid boundary where it connects to the outdoor nature landscape plaza.

Historically library has been served as one of the most important civic space. Not only its function was to archive physical books and scripts, but it also includes the most precious function; the sharing and transmitting of knowledge. Despite the fact that today’s trend of sharing and transferring knowledge has significantly moved to the digital medias still library’s core function remains very important because of the value of physical interaction that digital medias aren’t able to replace. In addition, today’s phenomenon of city growing more dense, civic space such as library has become more invaluable retreating place as major public space more than ever.

Our primary purpose is to create an environment that promotes various physical and cultural learning experience.

2. Cohesive learning experience: outdoor and indoor space & activity

Our proposal foundation starts from the thesis that the more space for social interaction the more interactive space with the nature, it is a better physical environment for learning. In overall, we created a simple diagram of the library; A landscaped sheltered open space and a simple form of the library building. We married the nature to the building by locating the main landscaped open space in front of the library’s main facade which faces South direction. The face of the library is not the building structure but the nature, a platform for various activities with simple form of open-air canopy structure. We tied this landscaped open space to the existing green buffer park area to the East and connected to the larger city’s green network. We introduced water feature, a shallow reflection pool, as part of the library open space where people including children can closely experience the one of the precious nature elements as well.

3. Sequenced elements; covered open space, the atrium and the library

We used architectural elements and allocating them in a specific sequence to achieve the main goal. Firstly the nature, the open space, is located front of the building as the true face of the overall library. Secondly, we introduced multi-functional large louvered canopy structure that not only provides shade to the garden space but also acts as a major shading device for the main building facade which faces the South. We believe that proper shade is necessary for the outdoor open space to be fully utilized especially for the summer times. We introduced pipe profile louvers that are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the building to simultaneously provide lights with the shade that also creates interesting textures to the space. Thirdly, Atrium is located in between the garden and the main library floors as a soft transition space and a space for connecting vertically. This four stories high glass atrium provides panoramic nature view towards the garden and to the green area of the golf club to the South at every floor. The atrium also is a sustainable architectural element where stack effect occurs, allowing hot air to naturally ventilate out of the building at the top. Lastly, the grand stair connects all the floors from the ground floor public program to the top main general section stack floor. The grand stair is one of the main experiential space to joy the changing view of nature vertically. The atrium truly becomes the connecting space, and also transparent transition space, a soft boundary, of the overall building where the garden creates different images in each season.
